The study aims to learn about a new, online speech therapy program called M-MAT Tele. M-MAT Tele is therapy to improve talking for people with aphasia after a stroke.
Who is running the study?
· Dr John Pierce is in charge of the study.
· John works at Aphasia CRE at La Trobe University.
· Austin Health Ethics committee approved this project
We are looking for Australian adults who:
· Have aphasia from a stroke in the last year
· Spoke English before their stroke
· Don’t have another neurological condition (for example: head injury, dementia)
· Can use a tablet, iPad or computer for online therapy
· Don’t have severe slurred speech or severe apraxia of speech (we can check for you)
What is involved in the study?
· Participants receive thirty (30) hours of online therapy.
· A speech pathologist provides therapy to a group of three (3) people with aphasia.
· There are six (6) steps in this research:
1. Meet with our speech pathologist. You will hear about the study and decide if you want to participate. The speech pathologist will check that you are eligible for the study. They will find the right group for you.
2. When your group is ready to start, you will complete an assessment. This assessment can take 2-3 hours.
3. Then your therapy sessions will begin. This will be 30 hours of M-MAT Tele. Therapy will be for two hours per day, three days each week. It will run for five weeks.
4. You will then complete another assessment. This can take 2-3 hours.
5. We will then give you a home program for 12 weeks.
6. Last, you complete one final assessment. This can take 2-3 hours.
We can’t pay you to be involved in the study, but you receive free speech therapy.
